Molloy Outlast Fontbonne
[09/29/2011 - 09:36 PM]

In their first meeting since the 2010 GCHSAA semi-final match, the girl's varsity volleyball team went on the road to defeat Fontbonne, 3-2, at the Aviator. It was a battle throughout, as each set was close with scores of 20-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-20, and 25-19.
Versatility helped lead the Stanners to their third league victory. There were many options for the coaching staff to play around with. Sophomore Katherine Kilkenny saw some time in the middle, and solid defensive play by Brittany Banker and Tori Taibe gave options in the back.
The Stanners dropped the first set, but regrouped and won the second with a strong offensive game. The team tallied thirten kills in the second set, on the strength of Madeline Casello, Kilkenny, an Emily Rabot combied for 12 of the kills.
Molloy dropped the third set before coming up strong in the fourth to force the match into the fifth set. Mareena Thotham, after missing out on the semifinal win last year due to injury, took control in the final frame. The middle hitter had four kills to pace the offense that set, and ended up with two blocks. Jenna Hoffman also had a big game in the back, leading the team with 29 digs.

Strong Serving by Lauren Pagan Lifts Stanners over Hilltoppers
[09/26/2011 - 09:40 PM]

Lauren Pagan has a lot of power. And that power manifested itself when the Stanners needed it most today.
Molloy visited Mary Louis, defeating the Hilltoppers 3-0. The Stanners soared through the first set, 25-15, before having to tough it out in the final two frames, 25-22 and 25-23.
The victory was due in large part to the play of Pagan. The junior outside hitter had five kills in the match, but will be most remembered for her serving prowess that day.
The Stanners struggled to catch up throughout most of the second set. After a crucial side out made the score 13-22, Pagan took the ball to serve. The junior served twelve straight, eight of which were service aces, and served the set out, giving Molloy the 25-22 victory.
Mary Louis was down, but not defeated. Despite Molloy having momentum on their side, Mary Louis dug deep and played a tight third set before falling to the Stanners.
The coaching staff was extremely pleased with Pagan's performance. "This is the Lauren we knew would make a difference on the team. She has a wealth of talent. It was great to see her excel today. Hopefully, she will continue to improve and be an amazing asset to the team."
Emily Rabot also contributed with seven kills. Amanda Price had 15 assists for the match.
Molloy will next travel to

Molloy Battles but Falls to St. Francis, 3-2
[09/23/2011 - 09:45 PM]

Archbishop Molloy HS girls volleyball team went into the season hoping to erase the demons from last season's final's loss to St. Francis Prep. Last year's Stanners had high hopes after a sound semi-final victory in the GCHSAA playoffs, just to bow out in straight sets to the Terriers in the Championship game.
While tonight's matchup had Prep the victor once again, it did not come easy. The Stanners were the first team to take a set from the Terriers in this early part of the season, losing 3-2.
Clearly, this is not the team of a year ago.
New additions like setter Amanda Price, outside hitter Katherine Killkenny, and opposite Emily Rabot made all the difference, complimenting them with last year's standouts Madeline Cosello (OH) and Jenna Hoffman (S). Cosello and Hoffman put up their typical numbers. Cosello had 10 kills and 14 digs, while Hoffman once again anchored the defense with 16 digs, while also notching four service aces. But the newcommers made their mark as well. Price had 21 assists, leading to Killkenny's 13 kills and Rabot's five.
"We are very proud of how these girls have come together in this big match. To go in and not only take the defending champions to five sets, but also have a 2-1 lead is a testament to how far the program has come in this year. We have a strong nucleus o
